THOMAS GILISSEN at Office Baroque

10/24/2014

Combining minimalism and conceptual art with Neoclassicism, Thomas Gilissen connects the history of sculpture with postmodernism. He deprives everyday objects from their mundane functions and changes their meaning by placing them in new contexts. His sculptures seem somehow familiar, yet at the same time they appear as if they have become something completely different as they comprise multi-layered suggestions and references to art history from the Roman antiquity and the Baroque to Neoclassicism. With minimum intervention, Gilissen alters the structure of everyday objects as vases, baskets and takes them from their original function to examine them in the context of the tradition of sculpture. - Office Baroque
